Around the house

Follow these tips to help save in other ways around the house.

  • Replace light bulbs with low energy equivalents. These use a lot less electricity than nomral bulbs and last a lot longer. You can now get low energy bulbs to replace most types of bulb.

  • Turn lights off when leaving a room, even if it's just for a few minutes.

  • Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to let as much day light in as possible instead of turning the lights on. This may also help warm the room.

  • Do not leave televisions and other electronic equipment on standby - they still use power. Turn them off properly at the mains.

  • Switch your mobile phone charger (and any other chargers) off when not in use.

  • Turn the tap off while brushing your teeth.

  • Do you need to flush the toilet every time you use it? You could also reduce the amount of water flushed by putting a full plastic bottle in the cistern, or a device like a Hippo.

  • If replacing a computer, buy a laptop instead - they consume up to 90% less energy.

  • Shutdown your computer if not using it for a couple of hours, and make sure it is switched off at night (along with printers, scanners etc).

  • Set the power saving mode on your computer to come in after 10-15 minutes of inactivity.
