Driving and transport

Follow these tips to help save money and reduce carbon emissions whilst driving.

  • Slow down - drive at 60 mph rather than 70 mph+ on dual carriageways and motorways.

  • Move up the gears as soon as possible without labouring the engine.

  • Accelerate and brake smoothly and gently. This will be easier if you keep a good distance from the vehicle in front.

  • Avoid very short distances as they are very inefficient.

  • Cut down on the air conditioning as this can increase fuel consumption by 10%. Open the windows instead at low speeds.

  • Remove excess weight. Take out any heavy items from the boot that you do not need to carry.

  • Remove the roof rack as it creates drag and makes the car use more fuel.

  • Check the tyres are at the correct pressure.

  • Get the car serviced regularly, to keep it as efficient as possible.

  • If changing your car, get the smallest car and engine that will meet your needs. Check the mpg and CO2 emissions before buying.

  • Can you leave a bit earlier or a bit later and avoid the rush hour?
