Follow these tips to help save money and reduce carbon emissions whilst driving.
Slow down - drive at 60 mph rather than 70 mph+ on dual carriageways and motorways.
Move up the gears as soon as possible without labouring the engine.
Accelerate and brake smoothly and gently. This will be easier if you keep a good distance from the vehicle in front.
Avoid very short distances as they are very inefficient.
Cut down on the air conditioning as this can increase fuel consumption by 10%. Open the windows instead at low speeds.
Remove excess weight. Take out any heavy items from the boot that you do not need to carry.
Remove the roof rack as it creates drag and makes the car use more fuel.
Check the tyres are at the correct pressure.
Get the car serviced regularly, to keep it as efficient as possible.
If changing your car, get the smallest car and engine that will meet your needs. Check the mpg and CO2 emissions before buying.
Can you leave a bit earlier or a bit later and avoid the rush hour?
