Heating and hot water

Follow these tips to help reduce your heating and hot water bills.

  • Turn down your thermostat and you could save 10% for each °C lowered. Try turning it down a little week by week until you find a level you are comfortable with.

  • Switch the heating off 30 minutes before bedtime or leaving the house - the radiators stay warm for a while.

  • Heat only the rooms you are using.

  • Lower your hot water temperature to 60 °C. You could try reducing this gradually to 50 °C to save even more money and reduce your carbon footprint further.

  • Have a quick shower instead of a bath, and save water and the energy needed to heat it. Be careful with power showers as they can pump out a lot of water.

  • If you do have a bath, do you need it so full or so hot?

  • Do not cover radiators with curtains, or put a sofa directly in front of them.

  • Put reflective panels (or just aluminium foil) behind radiators to reflect heat back into the room.

  • Replace an old boiler with a new condensing boiler which are about 90% efficient.

  • Lag hot water pipes and the hot water tank to reduce heat escaping.

  • Find any major draughts and fit appropriate draugh proofing.

  • Insulate your loft.

  • Close curtains and blinds as soon as it gets dark to stop heat escaping. Curtains with a thick thermal lining are even better.

  • Replace old windows with double glazing.

  • Have cavity wall insulation installed if your house can take it.
