In the kitchen
Follow these tips to help save in the kitchen and washing.
Only boil enough water in your kettle for your needs - do not fill it right up just for one cup.
Use the smallest saucepan you need, and put it on the correct size hob.
Keep the lid on the saucepan whilst cooking to keep the heat in.
Boil water in the kettle and transfer it to the pan as it is more efficient. Again, only boil the correct amount of water.
Where possible, defrost food in the fridge overnight. This helps keep your fridge cold AND cuts down your cooking time.
Do not put hot or warm food in the fridge - let it cool down first.
Turn the microwave off at the mains when not in use, otherwise it is still using power.
Try to keep your fridge 3/4 full, and your freezer totally full to make them as efficient as possible.
Wait until you have a full load before using the dishwasher.
Use as low a temperature as possible on your dishwasher. Does it have an economy or quick wash setting? We have found that the 35 degree C quick wash setting on our dishwasher works most of the time.
Turn the dishwasher off when not in use.
Wait until you have a full load before using the washing machine.
Use as low a temperature as possible on the washing machine (30-40 degree C).
Unless clothes are very dirty, use the quick wash to save time and money, and avoid the pre-wash setting.
Avoid using the tumble dryer - hang clothes up to dry instead.
